They offer wonderful, expressive, sensuous drinking. The growing season started with perfect flowering in June, following a wet, cool spring. This was followed by extreme heat and drought in July. In fact, it is one of the hottest July’s ever recorded in Bordeaux (until this year). August was also hot with some rain. September was warm and dry and so was October. The harvest began the last few days of September and continued until early October. The result was a large crop of high quality wines. But, because this vintage immediately followed the great hype of the 1982’s, the press toned down the volume on their reviews. However, in the Medoc some estates produced better wines than in 1982 and, particularly in Sauternes, 1983 is truly a great vintage.
